What specialists see most.
No hot water
Element or thermostat failure on electric systems; pilot, ignition or valve issue on gas. Qualified local specialists carry parts for most major systems.
Leaking system
If the storage tank itself is leaking, replacement is usually required. Leaking valves or fittings can often be repaired quickly and affordably.
Not hot enough
Usually a faulty thermostat, failed heating element, tempering valve issue, incorrect temperature setting, or a system undersized for the household. Straightforward to diagnose on-site.
Water too hot or scalding
Almost always a failed tempering valve. Simple replacement, restores safe outlet temperature.
Discoloured water
Internal tank corrosion — a specialist will test and confirm whether the tank is worth saving.
Noisy tank
Sediment buildup or a failing element. Options include flushing, replacement of the element, or replacing the tank if it's aged.
When a repair is worth it — and when it isn't.
Most hot water faults are worth repairing. A small number aren't. This is the honest test we apply on site before recommending anything.
| Repair usually makes sense | Replacement usually makes sense | |
|---|---|---|
| Age of system | Under roughly 8 years and otherwise sound | At or past its expected service life |
| What has failed | Element, thermostat, valve, thermocouple or igniter | The inner cylinder is leaking or corroded through |
| Repair history | First fault, or the first in several years | Second or third callout in a short period |
| Cost balance | Repair is a small fraction of a replacement | Repair cost is approaching the cost of a new system |
| Parts | Parts still available for the model | Model discontinued and parts hard to source |
| Household fit | Capacity still suits the household | You regularly run out of hot water |
Sitting between the two columns? The repair or replace guide works through it in more detail, and the replacement cost guide covers what the alternative involves.
- Diagnosis
- The fault is confirmed on site before any price is discussed.
- Most repairs
- Completed in a single visit where the part is on the van.
- Recovery
- A storage tank needs time to reheat before you notice the difference.
- Paperwork
- You keep the invoice — it's what manufacturers ask for on a claim.
Diagnose. Quote. Repair.
- 1Diagnose on-site
The specialist isolates the fault properly — no guessing, no throwing parts at it.
- 2Give you the number
You get a firm price for the repair, plus an honest read on whether replacement makes more sense.
- 3Repair with quality parts

Hot water repair questions.
Can my hot water system be repaired, or does it need replacing?
+
It depends on what has failed. Elements, thermostats, valves, thermocouples and igniters are usually repairable. A leaking cylinder is not — once the inner tank has corroded through, replacement is the only fix. We diagnose the fault on site and explain both options before any work is agreed.
Do you carry common parts with you?
+
We carry the parts that fail most often on the systems we see most often — elements, thermostats, valves and common gas components — so many faults are resolved on the first visit. Less common parts are ordered in and fitted as soon as they land.
How long does a hot water repair take?
+
Most straightforward repairs are completed in a single visit once the fault is confirmed. Recovery time afterwards varies by system — a storage tank needs time to reheat before you notice the difference.
Will a repair affect my manufacturer warranty?
+
Repairs carried out by a licensed plumber using appropriate parts do not void a manufacturer warranty. Keep the invoice — it is the record most manufacturers ask for if you later make a claim.
Why does hot water run out faster than it used to?
+
On a twin-element electric tank, the lower element commonly fails first — the upper element keeps heating a smaller volume, so you get some hot water but far less of it. Sediment build-up and a thermostat drifting low produce the same symptom.
Water is dripping from a pipe near the tank — is that a fault?
+
A small amount of discharge from the pressure and temperature relief drain during the heating cycle is normal. A constant stream is not, and usually means the valve has failed or the mains pressure is too high for the system.
